The idea for a Walk as a fundraiser for The Hearing Loss Association of America, originated with Anne Pope in 2006. Anne obtained information about the process and felt so strongly about the need to bring the issues concerning hearing loss to the public, that she and her husband offered to underwrite the first Walk4Hearing. National with full support, came up with the Walk4Hearing logo and with dedication, hard work and courage, the stage was set for the biggest fundraising event for people with hearing loss in history.
Beginning a project of such magnitude for a local chapter of HLAA requires tremendous commitment, enthusiasm and of course hard work. Our Rochester Chapter’s early committee, chaired by Jeannette Kanter, included Pete Fackler, Sue Miller Mary Chizuk, Laura Chaba, Trish Prosser, Vern Thayer, Barb Law and Ginny and Ray Koenig. The first year was a huge success raising almost ten times the amount of money they set for the Chapter’s goal, quite an achievement. Most surprising is that a number of the original committee members are the driving force behind our Walk4Hearing to this day.
Setting up the distance markers and donor signs was a very difficult task until Kevin Chaba, son of member Laura Chaba, along with his father as leader, and boy scout troop #31, came to the rescue. It is with great appreciation and relief we see them all each year.
